How Does Kratom Compare to Marijuana?

As more and more consumers join the kratom community, it’s understandable that there may be some confusion about what kratom is and how it compares to marijuana. With the considerable increase of sales within the Marijuana, CBD, and Hemp industries, kratom is often inaccurately assumed to be a plant of the cannabis family.

What is Kratom?

If kratom isn’t from the cannabis family, just what is it exactly? Originating in Southeast Asia, kratom is an herb that is harvested from the leaves of the mitragyna speciosa plant – a tropical evergreen tree that can grow heights of almost 100 ft.

The leaves of this special herb contain as many as 43 compounds including alkaloids that have been considered potentially beneficial in the alleviation of several conditions. Although kratom hasn’t been approved by the FDA to legalize it in every state, many Americans in the legalized states have been turning to kratom because of the potential beneficial properties found in some of the 43+ compounds.

What is Cannabis or Marijuana?

Similar to kratom, cannabis plants are tall with distinguishable serrated leaves. The origin of cannabis however stems back to Central Asia. The cannabis plant contains at least 483 compounds, with 60-100 of them being cannabinoids (many more are thought to exist). Deemed as a psychoactive substance due to the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis has been known to produce an altered state of consciousness or a ‘high’ for consumers.

Kratom vs Marijuana – How Do They Compare?

Both kratom and cannabis are similar in a variety of ways. The effect or benefit that someone can potentially experience from kratom or marijuana generally depends on the dosage, but both have been widely considered as potentially viable options for reducing anxiety, improving your mood, and general management of health and well-being.

Although kratom and marijuana share some similarities, there are a multitude of differences present. One stands out in particular. Marijuana contains the cannabinoid THC, the psychoactive substance that can produce an altered state of consciousness or ‘high’. Whereas Kratom contains an alkaloid, mitragynine, that gives users the potential benefits without the ‘high’.
